Copyright: Albert Kahn Museum & Hauts-de-seine

The exhibition is based on two missions photographic and cinematographic initiated by the banker philanthropist Albert Kahn.

Albert Kahn was convinced that knowledge of foreign societies encourages respect and peaceful relations among peoples. From 1909 to 1931, he commissioned photographers and film cameramen to record life in over 50 countries. The images were held in the Archive of the Planet, a collection of 180,000 meters of b/w film and more than 72,000 autochrome plates, the first industrial process for true colour photography, of which the museum now has the largest collection in the world.

At fifteen years of interval, the route followed its two operators, Stéphane Passet in 1913-1914, then Roger Dumas in 1927-1928, relates to the same region, north-west of the country, but their orientations are different.

In 1927, the operator Roger Dumas is invited to make a news story that immortalizes the Golden Jubilee Jagatjit Singh (1872-1949), maharajah of Kapurthala, Punjab.

On the steps of Stéphane Passet, the visitor enters the streets of cities to meet men: water carriers of Bombay, ascetics in meditation, guardians of the tombs, women in sari… but also architecture, those the mausoleum of the Taj Mahal, Golden Temple of Amritsar

These moments of life seized by the objective of the operator refer to reality, the fact human, art, history but also to the imagination.
