DUSHERRA FESTIVAL (VIJAYADASHMI)

India: Dusshera Festival Oct 12, 2005


Dusherra also known as Vijaydasmi, the Hindu festival is celebrated as the victory of the good over evil. It commemorates the death of King Ravana, his son Meghnath and his brother Khumbhkarna at the hands of
Lord Rama. Lord Rama assisted by big army of Monkeys (Vanar Sena).The Hindus relive the defeat of Ravana by celebrating this festival. Ramlila narrating the story of Rama played for 10-31 days before the Dusherra and on festival day, Ramlila narrating the story how he defeated Ravana is enacted.

Huge Effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkarna are made out of coloured paper, hay and stuffed with crackers that sometimes are as tall 70-100 ft high. An artist dressed as Rama shoots an arrow that has a flame on one end towards the effigies so that they begin to burn. Effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkarna. 

20000-30000 of people gathered in Ramlila Grounds of Kapurthala, to see this occasion.
Children with parents all seen and enjoyed the defeat of Ravana by Lord Rama. Small artists as Vanar Sena, fighting with army of Ravana. Kids bought toys and enjoyed every moment of it.

Lord Rama (Bhagwan Ram) fighting with Ravana (Rawan) during Dusherra Festival (Vijayadashmi) at Devi Talab Ground, Kapurthala. Thousands of people including children enjoying the cycle play Ramlila for 10 days.

Victory of Good over Evil (Satya ki Astaya par jeet) Ravan Died in the holy war against Lord Rama. Artists enact the play of Ramayana Epic with full dedication during Dusherra Festivity.

On the advice of Brother Lord Rama, Laxman is sitting near to Ravana, to learn from him because Ravan was great scholar too.

Effigies of Ravan, Khumbkarana & Meghnath : All set to be burnt on Dusherra. Huge Effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkarna are made out of coloured paper, hay and stuffed with crackers.
