kapurthala history – Golden Era

The history of Kapurthala state stretches back to the 18th century, when it was established as one of the princely states of Punjab under the Ahluwalia dynasty. This page traces the arc of Kapurthala history from its founding through the reigns of its most notable rulers, including Maharaja Jagatjit Singh, whose vision shaped much of the city’s iconic architecture and infrastructure.

Much of the untold history of Kapurthala revolves around its unique international connections, particularly the state’s relationship with France, which shaped everything from military traditions to architectural taste.

Kapurthala princely state history is distinctive for its close diplomatic and cultural ties with Europe, particularly France, which influenced the city’s palaces, gardens, and civic planning in ways rarely seen elsewhere in Punjab. The Ahluwalia dynasty Kapurthala rulers were known for progressive administration, investment in education, and architectural patronage that gave the city its enduring “City of Palaces” identity.

Kapurthala’s rulers balanced tradition with rapid modernization long before independence, setting a precedent for the city’s character today.
